Childsmile is a national programme to improve the oral health of children in Scotland and reduce inequalities in dental health and access to dental services. Full details are available at www.child-smile.org.uk From the age of six months, appointments will be made for your child to attend dental services on a regular basis. Childsmile is introduced to the family by the public health nurse or health visitor who will refer you straight to a Childsmile dental practice. You can also become involved by contacting us directly. At Kincorth Dental Practice we can tailor a programme of Childsmilecare to suit the individual. Each programme will include:
- Oral health advice (e.g. on healthy weaning, diet, teething and tooth brushing instruction)
- Annual dental check-ups and treatment, if required
- Twice yearly fluoride varnish applications from two years old

Helping your children learn to brush properly is of course important. First of all the right toothpaste should be selected with the appropriate Fluoride content. A ‘pea-sized’ amount of paste should be used and help should be given to guide the child around the tooth surfaces. Brushing with your child to begin with will ensure the correct time is taken.
Good brushing technique should take 2 minutes divide the mouth into 6 sections and take 20 seconds to brush each. Start with outer surfaces of the lower jaw than the inner and then the biting surfaces repeat with the upper jaw. Small circular movements near the gum-line is most effective.
